Blackburn Market and Culturapedia invite you to visit a brand new exhibition by a local artist.

Ian Halwai creates paintings rooted in memories and dreams of his childhood in Brunei. As someone of mixed heritage, he spent his early years in Brunei before relocating to England. Over time, Brunei dissolved into a distant memory, left behind with fragmented imagery – batik floral patterns, woven sarongs, and the dense surrounding jungle. A return visit in 2025 reawakened these recollections through an adult perspective, prompting a deeper exploration of identity, place, and personal history. Painting provides both a meditative practice and a space to process these evolving reflections.
